WELCOME to my class!!!

Fifth Grade Math

Fifth grade math is the foundation that must be established to be successful with math in middle and high school. Let’s work together and BUILD a strong solid math foundation. Major work will be in: multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals using the standard algorithm, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions, orders of operations, hierarchy of quadrilaterals, and converting customary and metric measurement.

Come on in

I LOVE having visitors and helpers in the classroom. You don’t have to be a math expert to help out. I encourage all parents, when time permits, to come in and visit our math classroom. There are many different things you can do when you visit: help out a small group during centers, prepare yellow folders, or just hang out with us. It’s an eye opening experience, come join us! If you would like to set up a time weekly or just here and there please contact me! The extra hands are always helpful!

Homework: SO EASY

Students will need to complete the following each week:

  • ONE tenmarks.com lesson. I assign it every Monday

  • TWO i-Ready Math Lessons. All students will have the oppertunity to complete one i-Ready Math lesson in class each week.

  • 45 MINUTES of i-Ready Math, most students will achieve this by completing the two i-Ready Math lesssons.

Studnets will have Monday to Sunday to complete homework. No homework can be made up after Sunday.

A DAY IN MATH CLASS

I have your student for 90-minutes each day. They come in unpack and head to centers for 30 minutes. Centers are completed once students have completed their reflection sheet. After centers students work on an application problem based on a previous lesson, it’s reviewed as a class. Then we move onto a fluency activity, these are fast and fun! Finally we focus on the core lesson of the day, many days its continuation of the previous day’s lesson. We work in whole group and partner groups to develop social skills and so that we can all become teachers. Students work in their workbook while I move around the room checking for success. Once students have shown success on the lesson they complete their exit ticket for a final grade, and they are allowed to correct exit tickets one time for a higher grade. Then we pack up and head to our next class or home for the day.

Math Centers

Centers are completed during the first 30 minutes of each period. Centers are designed to help re-teach standards that your child might be struggling with, practice standards that the class has almost mastered, or enrich (working at a sixth grade level) on standards they have mastered. Students complete a center reflection sheet at the end of each center and the reflection sheet is collected at the end of the week and recorded in the grade book as classwork, 40% of their grade. Center reflection sheets are worth 35 points and students grade themselves on 20 of the 35 points.

Math Interactive Journal

The Math Interactive Journal (Math IJ) should always be with your student. It should never be left at school or at home. This tool is your child’s Google to what is being taught in math. If they come to you for help on homework, please have them also bring their journal so that you guide them using the Math IJ. The Math IJ can be used on just about all assessments in class, excluding beginning, mid, and end of the year i-Ready assessment and FSA. The Math IJ should always have an up-to-date table of contents so that students can easily find help. If you find your child’s Math IJ is not neat, organized or missing pages please print completed pages from my website. I update the pages once a week, if not more often.

Accountable Talk

To help develop a sense of community and awesome social skills we will use Accountable Talk in our classrooms. Accountable Talk refers to talk that is meaningful, respectful, and mutually beneficial to both speaker and listener. Accountable Talk stimulates higher-order thinking—helping students to learn, reflect on their learning, and communicate their knowledge and understanding. Please see the Accountable Talk sentence stems in your child’s Math IJ.
